Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace and punctuation. Hyphenated words (like "well-known") are counted as a single word. Numbers and symbols alone are not counted as words.
Sentences are detected by looking for ending punctuation (., !, ?) followed by a space or newline. The tool accounts for common abbreviations, initials, and decimal numbers to avoid false sentence breaks.
Reading time is calculated based on an average reading speed of 225-250 words per minute for adults reading prose text. Speaking time is calculated at approximately 150 words per minute, which is a common conversational pace.
The readability score is based on the Flesch-Kincaid readability tests, which estimate how difficult a text is to understand. The score ranges from 0-100, with higher scores indicating easier readability. The reading level provides a grade-level equivalent of the text's complexity.
